I first visited Germany in 1989, when I spent a couple of months in Bernkastel, Germany, along the scenic Mosel River, during wine harvest (below, captured with an old low-res camera).

Since then, I've been to Germany a couple of times, mostly on pop-overs from other trips. Berlin is a vibrant, ever changing city and worth a visit.

I've returned to visit friends in Bernkastel a couple of times, most recently in 2013. We also spent time in Dusseldorf and headed over to Koln (Cologne) to see the beautiful Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage center.

Family Snapshot

In 1991, I visited a friend in Berlin, a fascinating time to visit the city, not long after the Berlin Wall was brought down. At the time, "leaving the American Sector" at Checkpoint Charlie still felt like entering a completely different world. The scars on East Berlin from years behind the Berlin wall were still highly visible and the path to unification of East and West Berlin was not entirely clear.

The famous Checkpoint Charlie is now a museum, commemorating the consequences and trials of the Cold War and the division of East and West Berlin.
