Generally speaking the 1970s and 1980s were very tumultuous times for many Central America countries. By the late 90s, things were generally calmer (although a highly destructive hurricane ravaged much of Honduras and Nicaragua in 1998). I had a keen interest in better understanding Central America, was familiar with it's checkered history (and the history of the US activities in Central America) and fairly up-to-speed on what was safe (at that time) and what wasn't.

While our son was young, travel to Central America allowed fascinating, adventure travel without a significant change in the time zones. Relatively speaking, it was a stable time in Central America, preceding the visible presence and impact of the drug gangs.
